Shiatsu is a safe and rejuvenating activity, but just like physical therapy, there are a few guidelines that should be followed.
A Few Cautions
Do not press any one point for too long.
Do not make a session too long.
Always consider the age and condition of your person you are giving the shiatsu massage to.
If someone has a painful condition that limits their mobility, do not make them lie or sit in an uncomfortable position.
Avoid giving shiatsu when the stomach is empty or too full. Wait at least thirty minutes after a meal.
Avoid giving shiatsu if the person has extreme weakness or exhaustion.
Avoid giving shiatsu if the person has an infectious skin desease, acute inflammation, or high fever.
Avoid giving shiatsu if the person has stomach ulcer or other problems with internal organs that require medical care.
Before You Begin
Before you begin, make sure your hands are clean and your fingernails are cut.
Coordinate your breathing with your movements, exhaling as you press, making sure you maintain correct, comfortable posture, and concentrate on what you are doing.
Encourage your partner to breathe naturally and regularly, exhaling when you press.
Press only with the palms of the hands and the balls of the fingers and thumbs, not the finertips or the joints.
Make sure you use the correct pressure pints and procedures. Do not try to hurry. If you are patience and regularity gives the best results for your partner.
