Basic Shiatsu Points

There are five basic points that are among the most fundamental points in shiatsu.

Medulla Oblongata: Pressure to this point is essential in treating many ailments, including headaches, migraines, and hangovers. This point is found at the indentation at the top of the neck, just below the base of the skull. When you feel fatigued, pressing this point will bring a mild sense of relief. Medium to strong thumb pressure is standard.

Namikoshi Point: This point helps in treating diarrhea, menstrual problems, and other ailments in the region of the hips. A Namikoshi point may be found on either side of the buttocks over a nerve that branches out from the sciatic nerve, approximately 2 inches slight diagonal from the point where the pelvic bone protrudes at the hip. Strong thumb pressure is used.

First Lateral Forearm Point: This point is the first in a series of eight points that run along the outside of the lower arm from the elbow to the wrist. It is located over a nerve and a muscle. Pressure applied here helps relieve tired arms. When it is pressed, you will feel a slight unpleasantness. This is natural, but pressure should not be too strong nor too long.

Solar Plexus: This is an abdominal point that corresponds to the stomach and helps to treat digestion, poor appetite in children, and other abdominal-related problems. The solar plexus has a 10-point abdominal series. Use palm pressure for this point.

First Lateral Shin Point: The first in a series of six points running along the outside of the lower leg, is helpful in relieving leg fatigue. The point is directly above a nerve, which stretches across a bone. You have found the point if you experience a slight discomfort from the result of pressing the vein against the bone. Since a nerve is being pressed, apply pressure gradually, not too strong and not too long.
